This weekend, I attended a lecture for successful businessmen and entrepreneurs. A reoccurring pain point came up as I was speaking with some of them. They were bored with what they were doing and felt the need or desire to do something different. They assured me that the enterprises they had founded were doing quite well. We discussed their marriages, and many of them had wonderful connections. We all discussed our children and the best way to raise them.
Everything appeared to be going swimmingly for these people, but they all expressed boredom, for lack of a better phrase. When I pressed them on it, I asked if they were bored, exhausted, or if there was something lacking in their lives. Finally, they admitted that they thought there was something missing in their lives. After a talk about them and what makes them happy, they realized they needed to mentor. They were called to do it, not because they should, could, or would like to.
They all mentioned feeling empty as if they had a hole in their hearts and couldn’t figure out how to fill it. They kept saying how they had no idea what was wrong, and it was truly bothering them. When I asked how they felt after doing anything in the mentoring profession, they all said they felt fulfilled. I asked how they felt when they helped others, and I could see it dawned on them that mentoring, helping, and teaching were what filled the void. Many of these men and women were earning in the eight figures, or $10,000,000 per year.
As we explored the obvious reality that they would have to forego revenue in order to go and mentor, EVERYONE indicated it wasn’t an issue since they want to help more than they want money. This is something I notice a lot with successful people. When things are going well for them, they don’t want to help others; they NEED to help others. Not from societal compulsion to aid, but from within, from their soul, from God. Many people, regardless of money, are referred to in this manner. If you have a sense of emptiness within you. If you feel unsettled in your life, as if something is missing.
It could be time to start diving deeper into your spiritual pillar and becoming a mentor. I’ve been mentoring individuals for several years and can tell you that it’s the best feeling in the world to see someone overcome adversity and succeed. We all have information that would be really beneficial to those around us. Unfortunately, many of us do not respect the time and trials we have gone through, as well as the lessons we have learned, enough to realize that we can save others the misery we had to go through.
There is so much you can do to help others if you merely recognize that you are a worthy teacher because you have been through something. Maybe your time helping is only a few phrases, or a 5 minute conversation, or maybe it takes a little longer, but if you’ve had an issue, solved it, and moved on, you can help the next person over the barrier.
